In petrochemical/chemical plant, the most common problem is Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC).
They mostly use austenitic steel such as stainless steel (such as SS304 and SS316). Even though austenitic stainless steel has good corrosion resistance, it may easily crack in a certain condition. Petrochemical companies have been trying to solve this matter, but there are no definitive solutions to SCC.
We have established the optimum shot peening conditions to prevent SCC and we can stop exterminating SCC problem from austenitic alloy.
